Detailed Introduction: Fantasy Reading Becomes an Alternative Landscape / Li Shijiang, taking advantage of the global box office success of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Taiwanese beauty mangaka You Suxian launched the "Angel Dream" series of novels, including Dark Memories, The Fall and Rebirth of Light, and Flame Emblem. At a time when fantasy has become a buzzword in the book market, the definition of fantasy remains a subject of debate. According to experts, the fantasy literature popular in the West differs from science fiction and myth. It often features magnificent magic, bizarre creatures, and a unique charm. The pioneer of fantasy literature, J.R.R. Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings author), defines it as "a novel set in a fictional world"—that is, the elements of the fantasy world are not from our world, yet they reflect our real world, offering a fresh yet familiar sense. If this description still seems obscure, you may be familiar with this feeling: stepping into the bedtime stories of your childhood; exploring the magnificent world of your dreams; realizing the beautiful fantasies of your youth; following the great heroes in your heart—this is fantasy.
Angel Dream is a long fantasy novel adapted from You Suxian's animation, narrating a grand and poignant story—after the long-sealed "Secret of Creation" (a curse that can erase all tangible worlds, maintaining the balance of the celestial, demon, and human realms) suddenly appears, it triggers an unprecedented war between the celestial realm, the demon realm, and the fallen angels. The generation that grew up reading comics has likely seen You Suxian's works, such as The Beauty and the Tyrant, Fire King, Angel Dream, and The Flying Dragon Chronicle, though most were pirated in the past. If You Suxian's comics give the impression of being magnificent and exquisite, her novels are even more tragic and captivating—the magical power of the Secret of Creation, the depth and mystery of the Demon Lord, the entangled love-hate between Gabriel and Satan Leaf, the brutal wars in the Sealed Realm, and the fusion of Angel Echo and Human Echo. The plot is the most of the book, but You Suxian's writing is also undeniable.
You Suxian is a beautiful and elegant middle-aged woman, and her writing, like her person, is timeless and charming, exuding maturity and rational beauty. This is evident in the mature and steady character portrayals and writing style of figures like the Demon Lord Jack Salissis, the Angelic Leader Gabriel, and Raphael. Of course, we can speculate that the author was also writing about herself, about her own reflections on life. It is particularly noteworthy that in narrating the Secret of Creation, the author uses profound philosophical concepts such as balance, equivalence, and exchange.
Regarding balance, for example, the equilibrium among the celestial, demon, and human realms, and the mutual balance of power between twin angels. Regarding exchange, for instance, the fact that the Secret of Creation is stolen requires an equivalent exchange to eliminate the, rather than simply destroying it to solve the problem. This is similar to how we exchange medicine for health when we are sick.
This year, riding the wave of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, fantasy novels are in vogue. Original works include Guo Jingming's Fantasy City, and imported works like South Korea's Record of Exorcism. Fantasy has become an alternative landscape in reading. And You Suxian's Angel Dream series adds a touch of female beauty and mystery to the world of fantasy novels.
