The author of Oliver Twist is Charles Dickens, a famous British novelist. He was born in a family of naval petty officers. At the age of seven, his family was forced to move into a debtor's prison, where he took on heavy household chores. He once worked as an apprentice in a shoe factory and later as a clerk in a solicitor's office before becoming a journalist for a newspaper. He only received a few years of formal education and became a renowned writer entirely through hard self-study and arduous labor.
