Features: Fundamentally speaking, resource and environmental statistics aim to describe and analyze the relationship between resources, environment, and the economic system based on the relationship between humans and nature using statistical methods. To achieve this goal, it is first necessary to clarify the following issues: the concepts of resources and environment, the relationship between resources, environment, and the economic system, the approach to establishing resource and environmental statistics, how the book will organize its content, and so on. These issues constitute the content of this chapter.
A review of current literature and textbooks on resource and environmental topics reveals that some focus on the statistics of specific resources or environments (e.g., forest resources, environmental protection) themselves, while others are purely economic activity statistics without systematic resource and environmental statistics, especially those that introduce the relationship between resources, environment, and the economy. The statistical issues and quantitative analyses related to these topics are often scattered across various specialized disciplines. This disconnect has led to the following problems: individuals engaged in resource and environmental management and research lack a clear understanding of how to integrate resource and environmental issues with economic activities, while those involved in economic management and research also have limited clarity on how to incorporate resource and environmental issues into economic processes.
In light of this, this book takes its starting point from resource and environmental issues, but its main thread is the relationship between resource and environmental issues and economic processes. It focuses on this relationship to structure the content of the book.
