Features: For 21st-century Chinese scholars, citizens, and decision-makers, this book indeed provides a second pair of glasses through which we can more clearly and better focus on understanding the broader patterns of complex interdependence, where interdependence and power are combined. — Robert Keohane, Preface to the Chinese Edition of Power and Interdependence This landmark work, initially written by two of the most renowned scholars in the field, offers rich theoretical pathways for understanding contemporary world politics. This book constructs a way of viewing world politics that helps us understand the relationships among economic, political, and institutionalized forms of cooperation, while also retaining the important role of realism in recognizing the significance of power and interests. The publication of the first edition in 1977 marked the beginning of the liberal institutionalist school of international relations challenging the dominance of realism. Since then, it has been one of the most frequently cited works in international relations research. The book was revised in 1989, with the two scholars adding responses to criticisms. The first Chinese translation of the first edition was published in China in 1992. After the third edition was published in 2001, it was translated into Chinese by the young scholar Men Honghua and published in 2002. Now, our press is launching an English photocopied edition of this classic work, hoping to provide a new source of materials for scholars and enthusiasts in China who are committed to the study of international relations theory. Two new chapters have been added in the third edition: Chapter 9 explores the impact of new technologies in the information age on power, interdependence, and the role of information; Chapter 10 examines the relationship between globalization and contemporary world politics in the context of power, interdependence, and globalization.
