Features: This book aims to examine the origin of ideographic characters from the perspective of their binary linguistic features, explore the creation of ideographic characters from the angle of visual representation and auditory imagery, and reflect on the structural characteristics of ideographic characters such as "symbolism," "pictogram," "loanword," and "phonetic compound," as well as the various debates they have sparked, based on the correspondence between visual symbols and auditory content. It also investigates the "radicals," "derivation," and "derivation" of ideographic characters from the perspective of linguistic categorization.
Chinese research on its own writing system—the Chinese characters—has accumulated over time, both before and after Xu Shen. In the field of Chinese character study, new archaeological discoveries and fresh insights into this ancient discipline have emerged. From this perspective, if the new achievements of Western linguistic research can be reintroduced into this ancient field of Chinese character study, it will undoubtedly provide a new perspective and a platform for further research. Even if it can only serve as a "pebble to stir the pot" for traditional Chinese character research, the author would be quite satisfied. It was with this motivation that the author completed this work.
