Features: The second edition of the textbook "Dentistry of the Tooth and Pulp" still contains three main sections:
1. Cariology: In this field, due to enhanced oral preventive measures in developed countries, the incidence of caries has been on a declining trend over the past three decades. Although some progress has been made in cariology research, it has not led to substantial breakthroughs.
2. Non-cariogenic diseases of the tooth hard tissue is also a relatively mature discipline. In developed countries, this content is taught in the book "Oral Medicine." Some hereditary-related diseases, such as "Hereditary Dentinogenesis Imperfecta," have now been identified at the genetic level, representing significant advancements. These developments are reflected in this book.
3. Pulpology: With the progress of biomedical and scientific technologies, new equipment and instruments have been continuously invented and adopted, leading to significant advancements in both basic and clinical pulpology. The understanding of pulp diseases has deepened, and human stem cell research has also been introduced into the field of pulpology. Although still in its early stages, this book provides an introduction to these developments.
The invention, creation, and commercialization of new equipment and technologies, particularly the clinical application of the root canal operating microscope, have made it possible to handle complex procedures such as treating curved root canals and retrieving broken instruments, which were previously difficult to manage. For this reason, this book has added chapters such as "Mechanical Root Canal Preparation" and "Microscopic Root Canal Techniques" to enable medical students to keep up with the latest knowledge.
Additionally, due to the widespread use of computers, the previously commonly used coordinate-based tooth position notation method is no longer applicable in China. This textbook recommends the WHO tooth position recording method, which is widely used internationally.
At the same time, some traditional treatment methods, which have been proven ineffective through practical experience, have been removed from this book. For example, the dry root canal technique, which was once widely used, is no longer recommended due to its frequent complications such as residual pulpitis and apical infection.
Furthermore, due to the excellent results of mechanical file instruments, ultrasonic file technology is no longer used internationally. This has also been removed from the book.
