Features: As an applied discipline, journalism certainly needs to connect with practice and solve problems. Practice has indeed continuously contributed a wealth of issues. However, without a "critical perspective" on practice and an "intellectual framework" for observing problems, our research may be led astray by practice and issues. This would not only make it difficult to truly solve problems but also reduce our research to being a slave to practice or issues. In terms of journalism education, the "operational," "technical," and "skill-based" training that prioritizes immediate results can hardly achieve the goal of cultivating "good journalists" and may instead produce "journalistic artisans." Every discipline has its foundational "way" ("Dao"). If the "way" does not exist, where can the "technique" find its place? As this series is titled "Contemporary Journalism and Communication Studies," it naturally faces this complex yet vibrant era, the Chinese journalism industry that is currently undergoing difficult transformation and reform. Therefore, the views presented in this series strive to incorporate the latest research findings in academia, the content aims to reflect the highest standards of contemporary journalism studies, and the cited examples are all recent and representative cases to highlight the "contemporary" aspect. In today's society, the maximum effectiveness of "journalism" relies on "communication." In this sense, the journalism industry is also a communication industry. We neither advocate for communication studies to replace journalism studies nor support journalism studies to exclude communication studies. The term "journalism and communication studies" as we use it refers to the full name of both disciplines. The purpose is to include some content that is difficult to encompass within the confines of traditional journalism studies.
