Science and Literature Series of China: Science Fiction Novel Volume

Author: Zong Jiehua, Jin Tao, Xinghe
Publisher:
Publish Date: 1999-08-01
Features: As a literary genre, science fiction was formally introduced to China in the early 20th century, with the works of French science fiction writer Jules Verne being the first to be introduced domestically. During this period, the main characteristics of Chinese science fiction were its strong popular science function. During the Cultural Revolution, science fiction, like other literary genres, was suppressed. In the mid-1980s, due to various social, political, and economic reasons, science fiction experienced a low point. Looking at the development history of Chinese science fiction, two immature conclusions can be drawn:
1. The advancement and development of science fiction literature depend on the appreciation and judgment of readers—exactly the perseverance of the "gods" is driving the development of Chinese science fiction;
2. Chinese science fiction literature remains immature to this day, with concepts, models, and schools of thought all unclear, and literary standards yet to be improved. Occasional disagreements are inevitable, and it is not a bad thing for there to be a "hundred schools of thought contending." As long as writers, readers, and critics treat each other frankly, seek common ground while respecting differences, they will ultimately reach understanding and unity.
