Features: The book is divided into 26 chapters, including four general chapters. Chapter 1: Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which introduces traditional Chinese medicine, related concepts, the meaning of TCM, and an overview of its development. Chapter 2: The Effects of TCM, a newly added section that briefly introduces the meaning and classification of the effects of TCM. Chapter 3: The Properties of TCM, which focuses on explaining the meanings, determination criteria, relationships with functions, and clinical significance of major properties, providing more detailed and accurate content, enriching and practicalizing the fundamental theories of TCM. Chapter 4: Factors Affecting the Clinical Effects of TCM, which introduces the influence of 12 factors—such as variety, origin, collection, storage, processing, compatibility, dosage, administration route, dosage form, decoction methods for decoctions, methods of administration, and contraindications—on the clinical effects of TCM, enabling students to master richer medication theories, pharmaceutical knowledge, and medication skills.
The specific section includes 597 herbs, classified into 22 chapters based on their primary effects. Unlike the one-year undergraduate textbook, the book separates expectorants, cough and asthma-relieving herbs, liver-calming herbs, and wind-dampness-stopping herbs into independent chapters, while combining the original toxic-removing, insecticidal, and itch-relieving herbs with toxic-removing and tissue-regenerating herbs into one chapter. Each chapter begins with "Learning Objectives," and the summaries are structured into five sections: meaning, effects and indications, property characteristics, compatibility applications, and usage precautions. This ensures clear teaching objectives, organization, and ease of learning.
The properties and effects of each herb are meticulously reviewed for greater standardization, rationality, and practicality. Under the application section, the relationship between the primary indications and effects, individual characteristics, and principles of compatibility are clearly explained. Special usage methods and precautions are elaborated with reasons to facilitate understanding and memorization.
