Famous figures and experts in the field of English discuss reading: Dry English sentences are not good enough. Don't always put the purpose of reading on improving English. Reading is primarily about absorbing knowledge, and in the process of absorbing knowledge, language is naturally absorbed. Thinking in English is an ideal that many English learners aspire to, as it is the foundation for expressing thoughts fluently in English. For Chinese students living in a non-English environment, it is indeed very difficult to think partially or entirely in English, but it is not an unattainable goal. From my own experience learning English, I have found that persistent extensive reading is one of the most effective ways to achieve this goal. For intermediate and advanced English learners, I especially recommend English easy readers. Synopsis: The Great Gatsby is a powerful work by the renowned American novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940), who expressed the theme of the disillusionment of the "American Dream" in perfect artistic form. Published in 1925, the novel is set in the modern upper-class white society of the United States and is narrated by Carraway. Carraway was born in the Midwest of the United States and later moved to New York to study the stock business, hoping to make a fortune. He lives on Long Island and becomes neighbors with Gatsby, the protagonist of the story, and becomes friends with him. Gatsby, originally named Gatsby, also came from the Midwest, was born into poverty, but was ambitious. He later became wealthy through bootlegging. He often hosted extravagant parties at his home, entertaining guests to display his wealth, with the purpose of attracting his former lover Daisy and winning her back. Five years earlier, when Gatsby was in the army, Daisy was his lover. During Gatsby's overseas service in World War I, she married Tom Buchanan, a wealthy and dissolute man, out of greed. However, the satisfaction of material and physical desires could not fill the spiritual emptiness and lack in Daisy's life. With Carraway's help, after reuniting with Gatsby, she seemed to rekindle their old romance. But Daisy was no longer the same as before; she was no longer the innocent girl Gatsby imagined, but a foolish, selfish, vulgar, and beautiful shell. Gatsby's beautiful dream finally shattered, but he still struggled in his last moments, holding onto a sliver of hope for Daisy, which led to a more tragic and pitiful outcome. Later, while driving Gatsby's car after drinking, Daisy accidentally killed Tom's mistress. She then conspired with Tom to cruelly frame Gatsby, leading to the husband of the deceased suddenly bursting into Gatsby's home and shooting him to death. Tom then took his own life, making Gatsby a final, selfish, and cruel sacrifice to the shallow and vicious Daisy. Carraway and a few of his friends attended Gatsby's funeral, a stark contrast to the hundreds of luxurious parties he hosted in life. After attending Gatsby's funeral, Carraway decided to return to his home in the Midwest, away from the noisy, indifferent, hollow, and false eastern metropolis.
