Features: Writing a book is not easy, and writing a history book is even harder. Confucius, as the foremost figure in world cultural and historical heritage, has garnered much attention and research, naturally resulting in a wealth of scholarly achievements. To write about Confucius and his family requires a certain academic courage, of course, but more importantly, it demands a profound historical foundation. The World of Families—The Historical Transformations of the Confucius Family, authored by Li Pengcheng and Wang Huxiang, takes a unique approach, focusing on family studies to explore the historical changes and cultural origins of the Confucius family in Qufu. This enriches the field of Confucius studies and embodies the spirit of academic innovation. Both young authors graduated from the History Department of Qufu Normal University. Li Pengcheng studied there twenty years ago, while Wang Huxiang pursued her graduate studies under my guidance for three years. Both have dedicated themselves to teaching and research, achieving notable accomplishments. They have now presented their new work, asking me to write the preface—not just out of teacher-student affection, but also because of the appeal of their work. I am delighted to agree. After a preliminary review, I believe the book possesses the following characteristics:
First, a broad scope, covering the entire process. The authors are able to present the historical transformations of the Confucius family in Qufu over more than two thousand years from a fresh perspective.
Second, extensive and accurate historical materials. A historical work relies on precise and detailed sources, which distinguishes it from literary works and forms its very lifeblood. This book is rich in materials and uses them accurately, demonstrating the scientific rigor and logical coherence of the work and enhancing its historical value.
Third, concise language with strong academic depth. The depth of a historical work depends not only on its sources and the historian’s thought but also on the clarity of its language. Only then can it endure over time, as historical works are also creations meant for readers. Elegant language can spark readers’ interest and generate broad social impact. This book is neither dry nor tedious to read; its concise and fluent prose possesses an aesthetic value of historical research, effectively blending academic rigor with artistic expression.
The book explores the origins and historical evolution of the Confucius family in Qufu, Shandong, delving into the cultural legacy of the family throughout history.
