The tradition of textual research in the governance of Qing scholars flourished in the preceding dynasties, especially during the Qianlong and Jiaqing periods, when numerous textual scholars emerged, such as Huiding, Dai Zhen, Qian Daxin, Duan Yucai, and Wang Niansun. They emphasized the study of characters, phonology, and etymology, excelling in the collation, annotation, authentication, and compilation of ancient texts. Additionally, they were well-versed in the examination of inscriptions, geography, astronomy, and chronology, achieving unprecedented academic accomplishments in the organization of classical texts and historical sources. Among these, Lu Wenchang's Collected Supplements to Ancient Texts, Jiang Guangxu's Notes on Collated and Supplemented Records, Qian Daxin's Examinations of the Twenty-Two Histories, and Ruan Yuan's Annotations and Collations of the Thirteen Classics are all regarded as first-class works of Qing-era textual research.
For this reprint, Collected Supplements to Ancient Texts uses the 1923 edition of the Baojing Tang Series published by the Beijing Zhili Book Bureau as the base text. Meanwhile, Notes on Collated and Supplemented Records is based on the 1883 edition. As representative works of Qing-era textual research, both books are reprinted together to benefit the academic community.
