At that time, many publishing houses had already published annual selections, but Wang Junshi felt that Novel Monthly had its own unique features and advantages, namely the brand of "selecting the best from the best" and the "Hundred Flowers Award," which fully reflected readers' aesthetic views, thus enjoying higher social recognition. Novel Monthly, launched in January 1980, had its highest circulation reaching 1.8 million copies. Starting in 1984, it established the "Hundred Flowers Award," which was selected every two years from the second year onwards. Due to being entirely voted by readers, it had a broad influence among readers and writers. The features and advantages of Novel Monthly are its brand of "selecting the best from the best" and the "Hundred Flowers Award," which fully reflects readers' aesthetic views, enjoying higher social recognition. In the 1980s, the circulation of the journal was generally large, and there were many opportunities for awards, with diverse award settings, but only a few have persisted to this day. Among the national literary journals, the "Hundred Flowers Award" is considered one of the longest-running awards, starting from the first award in 1984, held every two years, entirely relying on reader voting. At the same time, an editorial award and a reader award were established, meaning that the editor of the selected first-issue works also received awards. If the reader voting results align with the final results, the top 50 readers will also receive a reader award, rewarding them with a full year's subscription to Novel Monthly.
