He was born in Xiangxiang, Hunan. Originally a rural scholar, he passed the imperial examination in 1838 and entered the Hanlin Academy the same year, becoming a disciple of the powerful official Murang'a. In 1849, he became the Right Vice Minister of the Ministry of Rites. Thanks to the efforts of figures like Zeng Guofan, a period known as the "Tongzhi Restoration" emerged temporarily. Zeng Guofan was the central figure of this transitional period, exerting notable influence in politics, military affairs, culture, and the economy. This influence extended not only during his time but also continues to resonate today, making him one of the most prominent and controversial historical figures in modern China.
