Zuo Zhuan, also known as The Spring and Autumn Annals of Zuo, is traditionally attributed to Zuo Qiuming, the official historian of the State of Lu. It is a historical text that explains, supplements, and elaborates on Confucius's Spring and Autumn Annals, making it China's first compiled chronicle-style history. The book is rich in content and covers a wide range of topics. Its narrative spans from the first year of King Ying of Lu to the twenty-seventh year of King Ai of Lu, extending 13 years beyond the Spring and Autumn Annals compiled by Confucius. It records the major political, military, and diplomatic activities of the various states during the early Eastern Zhou period over 255 years, touching upon fields such as astronomy, geography, folk customs, music, poetry, philosophical ideas, and cultural arts. It serves as a crucial historical document for studying the social and historical conditions of China during the Spring and Autumn period.
