Features: Today, design has permeated every corner of human life. From Europe and America to Asia, design has become a new driving force in the global industry, and people have realized the arrival of a new era—the era of design. In the Chinese-speaking world, with the same excitement, design activities are highly active as people welcome the dawn of this era. While the Chinese graphic design in Hong Kong and Taiwan started slightly later than in developed countries, it has rapidly developed since the 1970s. Through frequent international exchanges, it has combined the rich visual elements of traditional Chinese culture with clear and modern design techniques, creating a modern Chinese-style graphic design distinct from Western cultural characteristics. Since the reform and opening-up in the early 1980s, the design community in mainland China has been exposed to modern design in its entirety. In just over a decade, it has skipped over decades of design development experienced by developed countries and is now integrating internationalization and localization, moving deeper into the integration and enhancement of design methods and thinking. Today, the modern design community in China is exploring new frontiers, and due to regional differences, it exhibits distinct characteristics. Overall, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland Chinese cities have diverse cultural structures, with historical and institutional factors significantly influencing design. However, a common "ethnic" cultural imprint has left a profound mark on the works of Chinese designers. Today, it is clear that focusing on ethnic identity and local culture is the fundamental path for Chinese design to reach the world. These cultures are expressed through tangible objects and visual forms, such as Chinese painting, calligraphy, the I Ching, Chan Buddhism, as well as folk arts like paper-cutting, clay sculpture, and woodblock New Year prints. "Ethnic" culture is the essential nourishment and spiritual presence that modern design in China urgently needs. As the saying goes, "Roots must be deep for leaves to flourish." While we emphasize aligning with the West or even engaging in dialogue with it, the prerequisite is a profound understanding of local cultural depth. Otherwise, it would merely be a clumsy imitation. In terms of actual design impact, Chinese-style elements evoke a sense of familiarity and pride, carrying an irreplaceable "ethnic" cultural imprint. On the whole, contemporary Chinese design still lags behind Japan, which is a thought-provoking issue. The reasons are multifaceted, but I believe the root cause lies in insufficient exploration of traditional cultural essence and the failure to integrate creative languages that are both uniquely Chinese and internationally accepted. The young design community in China has achieved remarkable accomplishments in participating in social progress and creating design value, forming a unique style of Chinese design and gradually establishing its position in the international design arena. Modern Chinese graphic design should rationally review and summarize the past, formulate proactive and feasible future development strategies, and then hope to successfully align with the world in the new century. With truly localized and ethnic design languages and theoretical systems, it can stand tall among the global design community, leveraging cultural charm to become one of the pioneers guiding design trends. China Advertising and Design Classification Yearbook is a professional and authoritative yearbook registered and certified by the China National Trademark Administration. The publication of this yearbook has played an important role in collecting and organizing outstanding design works in China, contributing significantly to the development of modern Chinese design.
