Since its publication in 1966, the English-Chinese Mining Vocabulary has been widely welcomed by engineering and technical personnel, designers, researchers, and faculty and students of universities and colleges in the mining industry. The book was previously revised in 1978, with the chief editing institutions being China University of Mining and Technology and Shandong Institute of Mining Technology. The following 18 years were a period of rapid advancement in world science and technology, as well as a time of remarkable achievements in China's industrial and agricultural production and science and technology under the guidance of the reform and opening-up policy. During this period, advanced technologies such as electronic computers, lasers, ultrasonics, and optical fiber communication were widely applied in the mining field. Environmental protection and safety and health were increasingly emphasized, while the mechanization, automation, and intelligence of production systems were promoted in mining. Knowledge in the global and Chinese mining industries was rapidly updated, and science, technology, design, construction, and production and operational management all appeared in new forms, developing at an ever-accelerating pace. In this context, readers urgently demanded a second revision of the original Vocabulary to supplement and update it in response to the needs of mining development.
The second revision primarily focused on geology, exploration (especially geophysical exploration and satellite-assisted exploration), surveying, mine construction, civil and industrial building, mining, rock mechanics, mine pressure and rock control, coal processing and comprehensive utilization, mining machinery and equipment, mine electrification, automation, and intelligence, as well as electronic computers and computing technology, enterprise economics and organization management. Approximately 18,900 new terms were selected from English and American books, journals, papers, and vocabularies over the past decade. Necessary corrections and additions were also made to the original revised edition, ensuring that each entry (except for some proper nouns without the need for transliteration and establishment of new names) had a concise corresponding translation. Existing annotations were also simplified as much as possible, and transliterated names were corrected and standardized according to a unified transliteration table, referencing the original pronunciation where necessary. The second revised edition contains approximately 100,000 terms.
The second revision retains the original book's format, using parentheses to indicate professional scope or provide necessary explanations. Abbreviations were corrected and supplemented, appendices were adjusted, and a geological time scale and stratigraphic sequence table were added. This revision aims to meet the needs of the new situation, with a focus on the coal industry while also covering metal and non-metal mining engineering to broaden the scope of terms. Efforts were made to expand the different professional translations for each entry. However, due to the limitations of the revisors, omissions and errors are inevitable. We sincerely hope that readers will point out any mistakes. The revision process received strong support and assistance from leaders and colleagues of relevant institutions. We express our gratitude here. February 1994
