Features: Huang Tingjian's calligraphy is generally characterized by elongated structures, tight central balance, cohesiveness without dispersion, exaggerated brushwork like long spears and halberds, undulating strokes with three turns, swaying and flowing, and a lingering charm. His cursive script breaks even more in form, with playful and erratic movements, displaying a bold and unrestrained spirit, as if surpassing Zhang and Zisu. The unique and strong style of Huang Shan's calligraphy is thus considered today as the self-reliant and rebellious one among the Four Masters of the Song Dynasty. However, let us take a closer look at his calligraphic journey. He himself once said: "[I have studied cursive script for over thirty years. Initially, I followed Zhou Yue as my teacher, so for twenty years, I failed to shake off the vulgar air. Later, I encountered Su Caiweng and Zimei's calligraphy, and only then did I grasp the essence of ancient calligraphy. Subsequently, I obtained Zhang Changshi's and Monk Huaisu's brushwork, which allowed me to glimpse the wonders of brush technique.] He also said: "[During the Yuan Dynasty, my calligraphy was dull in brushwork, often lacking precision. Later, when I entered the gorges and saw long-haired boatmen rowing, I suddenly realized the secrets of brush technique.] It is evident that his rebellion was entirely a transformation and transcendence built upon three foundations. These three foundations are:
1. Learning from the ancients with selective and reflective guidance;
2. Mastering nature through keen observation;
3. Gaining insight into the heart through glimpsing and realization.
At this point, he had shaken off the "vulgar air" and formed the method of reverse momentum and ( - sè xíng, a technique of slow, deliberate brushwork). His radiating and expansive structures were no longer aggressive or abrupt, truly realizing his personal aesthetic principles in calligraphy: transcending vulgarity and prioritizing charm.
