Features: During the Qing Dynasty, there were numerous women poets, among whom the most famous was Gu Chun. She was a member of the imperial family, holding a unique status. Compared to ordinary women of the literati who were skilled in poetry, she attracted even more attention. As her exceptional talent and charm were increasingly admired by the world, she also became the basis for literary tales of "romance." A speculative "romance" between Gu Chun and the outstanding literary figure Gong Zizhen has been widely circulated in literary circles since the late Qing Dynasty, even becoming the inspiration for the famous novel The Flowers in the Sea of Suffering by Zeng Pu. The novel vividly depicts the supposed "one-night stand" between Gu Chun and Gong Zizhen, making it quite sensational. While scholars disapprove of this writing style, they cannot help but doubt certain ambiguous phrases in Gong Zizhen's collected works, leading to the so-called "Lilac Flower Case," which remains uncertain to this day. However, those who have truly read Gu Chun's poetry often find it hard to believe in such rumors. Renowned scholars Meng Sen and Su Xuelin wrote lengthy essays, meticulously examining the facts and refuting these claims. Modern lyricist Kuang Zhouyi bluntly stated: "Words reflect the heart; reading Taiqing's poetry can reveal her character, making no further debate necessary." (Preface to The Fish Songs of the East Sea) Although people today certainly do not believe that her romance with Gong Zizhen would tarnish her character, it is true that "words reflect the heart." The artistic world presented in Gu Chun's poetry, seamlessly blending with her personal life, is undoubtedly pleasing to the eye. Yet, it is regretfully unrelated to that rebellious male figure who shockingly shook the order of reality.
