Features: Underground engineering support structures are widely used in various types of construction, transportation, water conservancy, mining, municipal, national defense, and civil air defense projects. The development of theory for underground engineering support structures has a history of over 100 years, with decades of experience in China. The calculation theory of underground engineering support structures can be divided into traditional support calculation theories based on known ground pressure loads and modern support calculation theories represented by the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) tunnel design and construction methods, as well as numerical analysis techniques such as finite element and boundary element methods. Additionally, based on the study of the constitutive relationships of geotechnical materials and macroscopic rock mass mechanical parameters, many new mechanical models and computational methods for elastic, plastic, and viscous materials have been established. Furthermore, new technologies that utilize field measurements to provide feedback on design and construction by incorporating field monitoring information have been developed.
Underground Engineering Support Structures is a teaching textbook written for undergraduate and graduate students of the Underground Structures program at the former Air Force Engineering College. It has been expanded, revised, and enhanced with some of the latest content from the field of underground engineering design and the author's recent research findings, making it a comprehensive resource. The book covers the following topics: fundamental knowledge of rock pressure theory, analytical and numerical calculation methods for support structures, information-based design methods that combine engineering analogy, theoretical analysis, and field monitoring, design characteristics and methods for semi-covered structures, straight wall arch structures, and oil tank structures, calculations for composite lining structures, and reliability calculations for shotcrete support structures. These contents reflect the current technical level of design theory and application in underground engineering support structures.
The book is rich in content, well-organized, illustrated with diagrams, and practical. The language is concise, straightforward, and fluent, making it a valuable scientific treatise for technical personnel engaged in underground engineering design, construction, teaching, and research. Its publication is expected to benefit a broad range of civil engineering and geotechnical engineering professionals, and the author is delighted to contribute a preface. The book systematically introduces the fundamental theories and calculation methods of underground engineering support structures, including: fundamental knowledge of rock pressure theory, analytical and numerical calculation methods for support structures, principles, types, and modern support structure theories, information-based design methods that combine engineering analogy, theoretical analysis, and field monitoring, as well as the design characteristics and methods for semi-covered structures, straight wall arch structures, and oil tank structures commonly used in underground engineering. The book also provides detailed explanations of more modern composite lining structures and the reliability design of shotcrete support structures. These contents reflect the current technical level of design theory and application in underground engineering support structures.
The book can serve as a teaching textbook for relevant majors in higher education institutions and can also be used as a reference for researchers, designers, and construction personnel in industries such as railways, transportation, water conservancy, mining, municipal engineering, bridge construction, and national defense engineering.
