Shannan (Lhoka) is located in the Tibet Autonomous Region, south of the Gangdise Mountains and the Nyenqingtangula Mountains, in the middle and lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo River. It covers an area of over 80,000 square kilometers and has a population of over 300,000, with the Tibetan population accounting for 98%. Its unique natural conditions have made Shannan the cradle of the Tibetan people's survival and prosperity. The beautiful myth of the divine monkey and the Rakshasa woman giving birth to the highland people originated in Zedang's Gongbo Ri Mountain. Gongbo Ri Mountain has since become a sacred place for Tibetans to trace their roots.
With its long cultural heritage, Shannan has played a prominent role in Tibet's political and historical development. The first slave-state regime in Tibet, the Tubo Dynasty, was established in Shannan and later used it as a base to unify all of Tibet.
