Publishing Date: 2004-01-01
Features: The "Handbook of Scientific Classification·Physics" published by U.S. FactsOnFile Press includes the following sections:
The glossary contains over 1,400 entries, many of which are accompanied by simple diagrams to help explain the meaning of the terms. Topics include: acceleration, boiling point, catalyst, data communication, electrolysis, gamma radiation, lenses, microwaves, relative atomic mass, thermal conduction, and X-rays, etc.
Figures introduces more than 300 physicists from ancient times to the present, whose discoveries have advanced human understanding of physics. These scientists include: A.G. Bell, A.H. Compton, Pierre Curie, C. Doppler, Albert Einstein, Euclid, C.D. Wallis, H.W. Geiger, S. Hawking, Pythagoras, E. Walton, and R. Yarrow, etc.
Chronology covers nearly 9,000 years of the history of physics, including major discoveries and significant events in physics: Empedocles of ancient Greek philosophy proposed the theory of the four elements of matter (fire, air, water, earth) (440 BC); the abacus was used as an auxiliary calculation tool in Europe (500 AD); British mathematician W. Oughtred introduced the "X" symbol to represent multiplication (1631); German mathematician E. Goldstein discovered cathode rays (1876), etc.
The series published by U.S. FactsOnFile Press is equipped with a convenient index, which will facilitate students and teachers to quickly verify information. This book places physics within the broader context of science, highlighting the close connections between all disciplines, and allows for comparison and integration of information across different fields.
