The surname Ma originated from the royal family of Zhao during the Warring States period. Ma Shu was a renowned general of Zhao and was enfeoffed as Marquis of Ma Fu. After Zhao Kuo's defeat and suicide, his descendants, ashamed of their connection to Zhao, changed their surname to Ma.
