This companion book is designed to accompany the College English Intensive Reading textbook published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press. The purpose of this book is to embody a student-centered approach, starting from the actual needs of students, fully considering the various difficulties they encounter in learning English, and striving to save them valuable time while improving learning efficiency. The specific features are:
1. Text translation and detailed explanations of difficulties are arranged at the beginning of each unit, making it especially convenient for students to follow the teacher’s lectures in sync. For difficulties encountered during lectures, students can refer to the translation on the left or compare and reference the explanations on the right, thereby doubling their learning efficiency.
2. Text annotations and translations. The English annotations in the text are often hard for students to understand, so we have translated all of them into Chinese. We believe this will greatly benefit students in previewing the text.
3. Since most of the texts in the textbook are derived from original English works, their wide range of topics, profound thoughts, and complex backgrounds make it difficult for students from different cultural backgrounds to grasp the content. To help students better understand the essence of the articles, we have included a "Background Knowledge of the Text" section.
4. Based on the College English Teaching Syllabus and the CET Syllabus, we provide detailed explanations of key vocabulary in the text. We try to help students summarize memory techniques, introduce related common phrases, and include a typical exam question for testing, thereby helping them build a solid vocabulary foundation.
5. Emphasis on differentiating easily confused words. As English learning progresses, students encounter more synonyms, and these synonyms add to the difficulty of learning English, leading to frequent mistakes in various communication situations and CET exams. Therefore, in this section, we compare and analyze these easily confused words to help students clarify their actual meanings in different linguistic contexts.
6. To closely integrate regular college English learning with CET-4 preparation, we have incorporated past CET-4 questions into each unit, ensuring they are integrated throughout the college English textbook learning process. After students practice these questions, we provide a careful analysis and explanation to help them adapt early and pass the exam smoothly.
7. Reference answers are provided for all post-unit exercises, followed by Chinese translations. Explanations are given for any difficult points.
8. Considering the special importance of reading comprehension, which accounts for 40% of the CET-4 exam, we have specially included reading skills guidance and translations of reading materials in the textbook to help students pay due attention to reading.
9. In the CET-4 exam, writing accounts for 15 points. Past experience shows that without regular writing practice, it is difficult to achieve ideal scores in the exam. In fact, writing not only needs training but also targeted training. To ensure students’ training is effective, we have included writing skills guidance and analysis of past writing samples. Through systematic guidance and practice, we hope to help students build a strong foundation in writing.
10. The last item in each unit is the CET-4 achievement test with detailed explanations. This is a comprehensive test for each unit, with question types and difficulty levels similar to the CET-4. Reference answers and detailed solutions are provided after the test. We hope that through self-assessment, students can not only understand their mastery of the unit but also determine their future learning goals.
