Features: The Shanghai Financial Development Report (2003) is part of a series, and the one published this year is the second volume. This manuscript is an integrated work of reference, comprehensiveness, and research, organized by the Shanghai Municipal Financial Work Committee and the Shanghai Financial Office. The book is divided into 4 parts and 27 chapters, providing a comprehensive and systematic reflection of Shanghai's financial development in 2003 and the process of building an international financial center. This book was organized under the leadership of the Shanghai Financial Office, giving it a certain authority and reference value. Like the structure of the previous book, this one is also divided into 4 parts—comprehensive, market, business, and environment—with 27 chapters, adding 3 more than the previous one. These three new chapters cover the construction of Shanghai's Bank Card Industrial Park, financial risk prevention, and the evaluation of financial service quality. These added sections focus on Shanghai's international financial center construction and financial risks and services, making them a new feature of this book. To enhance readability and knowledge, the authors have also added "columns" at the end of some chapters, which include either summary texts or informative content, another distinctive feature of this book. Additionally, the preface and table of contents are provided in English to facilitate international readers in understanding the current state of Shanghai's financial industry.
In the early 1990s, with a major shift in Shanghai's urban positioning, the city's economic development function also transformed, with the goal of establishing a new growth pole centered on economy, finance, trade, and shipping becoming a reality. After more than a decade of effort, Shanghai has preliminarily established its position as a domestic financial center, laying an extremely important foundation for achieving its goal of becoming an international financial center. The Shanghai International Financial Research Center and the Department of Regional Economics at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences have collaborated to objectively and comprehensively review and summarize the development trajectory of China's financial market over the past 13 years. They have also analyzed the strategic progress of Shanghai in building a national financial center, resulting in this book, which serves as a reference for industry professionals.
