Since the reform and opening-up, the power industry in China has developed the most rapidly among all industrial sectors. Major power grids have covered all urban areas and most rural areas in the country. China's installed power capacity and power generation rank second in the world. The power industry in China has entered a new era characterized by large-scale units, large power plants, large power grids, ultra-high voltage, and automation. However, with the continuous development of the economy and the improvement of people's living standards, especially after China's entry into the WTO, domestic power supply has become increasingly tight. The existing installed power capacity and power generation can no longer meet the needs of modernization, and it is urgently needed to reach a new level. The rise of the power industry will depend on a large number of high-quality, skilled, and English-proficient power science and technology talents. So, what are the requirements of the power industry for the English proficiency of technical talents? Clearly, CET-4 and CET-6 certificates do not indicate the actual English application level of the certificate holders. We believe that being proficient in English means being able to engage in all-round activities such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation in English. Being proficient in English means being able to freely communicate with foreign peers in business negotiations and academic exchanges in English, discussing various aspects of power plant construction, power production, transmission, and sales. Being proficient in English means being able to write papers, reports, and letters in standardized English. Clearly, the current training models and English textbooks are no longer suitable for cultivating new types of power science and technology talents. Therefore, we must begin a new round of teaching reform. Our goal is to completely change the foreign language quality of graduates from power universities, enabling them to fully utilize their foreign language advantages in the future and secure a place in the power talent market. With a history of 60 years, Shanghai University of Electric Power is the cradle for cultivating power science and technology workers and urgently needed talents in the power system. To train more compound talents who can align with international power standards, we have organized English experts and scholars to meticulously compile a new series of power English textbooks covering listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation, encompassing all aspects of the power industry.
