In traditional Chinese figure painting, the portrayal of women (shi-nü) has a long history and holds a significant position. The earliest extant shi-nü painting is the "Feng Kui Figure Silk Painting" from the Chu Dynasty, which is considered the earliest surviving example of such works in China, though it is still in its early stages. During the Jin Dynasty, shi-nü painting saw some development. Works like Gu Kaizhi's "Nü Shi Zhen Tu" (Admonitions of the Instructress to the Palace Ladies) and "Luoshen Tu" (The Lady of the Luo River) demonstrated more mature techniques and formats but were still not fully refined.
The Tang Dynasty marked a peak in the history of Chinese painting. In the Song Dynasty, shi-nü painting became more narrative and folkloric, with figures rendered in a realistic style—vivid, dignified, and detailed, as seen in works like Han Chen's "Zhuang Liang Shi Nü Tu" (Painting of Women in Makeup).
By the Qing Dynasty, the style of shi-nü painting had become overly delicate and frail, detached from reality. The figures were portrayed as slender and coquettish, losing the healthy and dynamic spirit of Tang and Song Dynasty shi-nü paintings. However, the Qing masters drew on some positive elements of literati painting, emphasizing graceful postures and a preference for elegant, ethereal styles. They also incorporated Western painting techniques into their works, paving the way for future innovations in figure painting.
Throughout history, shi-nü painting evolved over more than two millennia, becoming a treasured part of China's cultural heritage. It offers invaluable lessons for contemporary painting innovation.
