Features: This is a practical classical Chinese dictionary primarily aimed at middle school students, but it can also be used by middle and high school teachers and for teaching and learning reference. It is a compact language tool designed to enhance classical Chinese reading skills. The selection of entries and the explanation of meanings in this dictionary mainly reflect the following characteristics:
1. Standardization. The dictionary includes over 2,000 characters, all sourced from the classical Chinese poems and prose sections of the newly revised middle school Chinese textbooks published by the People's Education Press, as well as the list of classical Chinese poems and prose required for memorization in high school according to the Ministry of Education. Most of the definitions and example sentences are taken from the textbooks, ensuring standardization, representativeness, and persuasiveness. The dictionary includes fewer entries for rarely used characters that appear in the textbooks, while striving to be comprehensive, systematic, and well-organized in its coverage of characters, making it convenient for students to review and consult.
2. Targeted Approach. The dictionary focuses on explaining common linguistic phenomena and textual knowledge, as well as commonly used idioms and phrases. It avoids unnecessary depth or complexity, emphasizing practicality, relevance, and liveliness. The goal is to address the key and challenging points found in textbooks and in the study of classical Chinese, laying a solid foundation for middle school students to read classical Chinese smoothly.
3. Extensibility. The dictionary is designed to meet the needs of both middle and high school students for exams while also improving their practical application of classical Chinese knowledge. To achieve this, the dictionary not only ensures a strong foundation in basic knowledge but also broadens the scope, emphasizing knowledge transfer and considering different levels of reading comprehension. It aims to make the content both familiar and refreshing for readers, especially middle school students, ensuring they gain both confidence and new insights.
