Features: This series is divided into "American Film Classics," "German Film Classics," "Italian Film Classics," "French Film Classics," "British Film Classics," "Joint Classics of Spanish, Swedish, and Polish Films," "Japanese Film Classics," "Russian and Soviet Film Classics," and "Chinese Film Classics." In terms of layout, each sub-series includes introductory texts before each volume, providing an overview of the development, artistic characteristics, and cultural background of the films (or countries) in that volume. Each film (or category) is accompanied by production dates, key creative personnel, awards, and a synopsis. The main body of each entry features a catchy and innovative title that summarizes the key content. Each film (or category) is illustrated with 1–2 movie stills or historical photographs (black and white) to enhance visual appeal and vividness.
In terms of writing, the main body should not merely replicate the general film appreciation entries found in film dictionaries. It should avoid being overly broad in scope while maintaining depth, offering both meticulous analysis of film language, artistic techniques, certain symbols, details, and narrative gaps, as well as a macroscopic grasp of the cultural context. The goal is to uncover the underlying ideological connotations and national cultural characteristics hidden behind the form ("ideology of form"). The writing should strike a balance between the reliability and precision of artistic analysis and the liveliness and accessibility of expression. It is particularly encouraged to organically (rather than mechanically) apply cultural criticism and cultural analysis methods, such as mythological archetypal criticism, psychoanalysis, film narratology, ideological criticism, film semiotics, postmodern and postcolonial theories, etc. Essentially, each main entry should be a relatively independent short essay (but not overly obscure), while the entire book should have a clear historical thread and a relatively cohesive overall structure.
This series helps readers not only improve their artistic appreciation, gain aesthetic enlightenment, and enjoy artistic pleasure but also understand the history, culture, and national character of different countries through the colorful world of cinema. The series is aimed at a broad audience of film enthusiasts, including middle and high school students, young people from various social strata with intermediate or higher cultural levels, and knowledge-seeking groups. It can also serve as supplementary teaching material for university art education, film and television art courses, international political relations, and foreign trade and foreign languages courses, as well as an art and cultural popularization resource for young adults.
