1. Since the reform and opening-up, especially after joining the World Trade Organization, China has accelerated its integration into the international community. The enthusiasm for learning foreign languages, particularly English, across the society has reached unprecedented levels. Many young children also place great importance on learning English well. To facilitate English learning for children and help them master commonly used English vocabulary, we have compiled this "Children's Chinese-English Dictionary."
2. The content of this dictionary consists of common Chinese entries suitable for children's learning and use, along with corresponding English definitions.
3. The Chinese entries in this dictionary include single characters, compound words, and frequently used words derived from single characters and compound words. There are 1,725 single characters, 7,700 compound words, and 2,520 commonly used words derived from single characters and compound words.
4. Single-character entries are arranged in the order of Chinese phonetic alphabet. Characters with the same pronunciation but different tones are listed in the order of "yīnping (level tone), yángping (rising tone), shǎngshēng (falling-rising tone), and qùshēng (falling tone)." Characters with the same pronunciation and tone are arranged by stroke count. Characters with the same form but different pronunciations or tones are arranged in phonetic order or by "tones," with alternative pronunciations noted at the end of each entry.
5. Compound-word entries are arranged in the order of the Chinese pinyin letters of each character and placed after the English definitions of single characters. Except for phrases and compound words, the part of speech of most words is generally indicated. Words and phrases in the definitions are separated by slashes. Multiple definitions of the same part of speech are generally separated by commas, while different parts of speech are separated by semicolons.
