Features: American youth Barnes suffers a spinal cord injury in World War I and loses his sexual ability. After the war, while working as a journalist in Paris, he falls in love with the British woman, Ashleigh. The lady is solely obsessed with pleasure, while he can only drown his sorrows in alcohol. They, along with a group of male and female friends, go to Pamplona, Spain, to attend the bullfighting festival, seeking spiritual stimulation. The lady rejects the persistent pursuit of the Jewish youth Cohen but falls for the 19-year-old bullfighter Romero. However, after spending some time together, due to the significant age gap between them and the lady's unwillingness to ruin the pure youth's future, their relationship ends unhappily. The lady eventually returns to Barnes, though both are aware that they can never truly be together. This is Hemingway's first major novel, through which he becomes the voice of the "Lost Generation" and establishes his unique Hemingway-esque writing style with this book.
