Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese Calligraphers

Author: Jin Tengda
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2001-12-01
Features: This book not only introduces the name, age, origin, courtesy name, style name, life story, artistic style, and achievements of each inductee but also publishes their portraits and representative works, aiming to establish a three-dimensional image of the inductees. Considering the professionalism and academic nature of the book, it primarily focuses on the artistic career and achievements of the inductees, with other aspects generally not elaborated in detail. The positions and titles of the inductees are based on the information available at the time of manuscript completion. Some inductees hold multiple positions, but due to space limitations, only key ones are listed. The evaluation of the artistic characteristics and styles of the inductees strives for objectivity, accuracy, and appropriateness, avoiding both overly high praise and vague individuality. This is a challenging task, and despite considerable effort, some inaccuracies may still exist. Moreover, many authors are continuously improving, and future developments are even more unpredictable, so the classification of their artistic works in this book should only be considered as a reference and not as a definitive judgment. The entries are primarily based on materials provided by the inductees themselves, as well as their relatives or relevant calligraphy and painting organizations. Some entries are written by referring to relevant research materials. The number of people included in the dictionary is uneven across provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions. This is partly due to the inherent differences in the foundations of each region, and partly because we have limited understanding of certain areas and have not collected submissions comprehensively. Some calligraphers and painters who should have been included were unable to be contacted, and thus their materials could not be obtained, leaving these entries temporarily incomplete and to be supplemented in future editions. The collection of materials for deceased calligraphers and traditional Chinese painters is particularly challenging, especially when it comes to assembling portraits, biographies, and representative works. As a result, some renowned figures could not be included in this compilation.
