Case Background: A high-ranking and powerful individual is murdered, and the suspect is arrested but later deemed innocent.
Crime Investigation: Suspects appear one by one, only to be ruled out one by one, as the truth of the case gradually unfolds.
The Truth: Initially, the investigation has two motivations: one is to save the innocent suspect and clear his name, and the other is to avenge the victim. As the truth of the case is fully revealed, the victim himself has no justice to pursue, because the victim deserves his fate, while the real culprit has hidden circumstances that justify his actions. At this point, the sole purpose of the investigation is to save the innocent suspect, and capturing the murderer itself becomes irrelevant.
Balance: The final resolution of the case strikes a balance between law and justice, as well as emotions. is clearly an suspenseful plot-driven novel, but it is also a social novel. Through the investigation of the career politician Jeremy Fuller and the trial of the Fuller murder case, it presents a picture of the current state of the American political scene and reveals the inner workings of the U.S. judicial and political systems. Here, we see that the political ambitions and personal biases of the state prosecutor and judge influence their actions in court, their attitude toward the case, and their judgments. The prosecutor and judge also distrust each other and undermine one another. Prosecutors, governors, and wealthy businesspeople collude and exploit each other. Politicians, for their own political futures, are willing to murder predecessors, betray national and public interests, and consider fairness and justice insignificant compared to their personal gains.
Senator Jeremy Fuller of San Francisco was shot and killed. When the police arrived at the scene, they found the Black man Hamell Washington attempting to flee the crime scene and subdued him, arresting him on charges of robbery and murder. However, no lawyer in San Francisco was willing to defend him. Lawyer Albert Craven, deeply convinced of Hamell's innocence, hired Joseph Antoneilli, a high-paid lawyer from Portland, to defend Hamell. Antoneilli learned that Senator Fuller was currently campaigning for Governor of California and hoped to run for President in two years. Just two weeks ago, Fuller had met privately with the President, but the meeting ended unhappily. Antoneilli visited Shirem Green, a former Governor of California, and learned that to retaliate against the betrayal of the then California Attorney General, Green had provided millions of dollars in funding, encouraging Marshall, who was then unknown, to run for office. However, Marshall suddenly died of a heart attack during the campaign, and Marshall naturally became the Attorney General and later the Governor. This time, when his position as Governor was threatened, Fuller was shot again—not by coincidence. As the case progresses, Antoneilli is threatened and blackmailed by unknown individuals, demanding that he drop the case. Filled with anger, he becomes even more determined to win the trial. In the city of San Francisco, filled with conspiracies, traps, betrayals, and lies, who is the real murderer?
