Author Bio: Ma Yueran studied Chinese with the Swedish sinologist Bernhard Karlgren from 1946 to 1948. From 1948 to 1950, he conducted dialect surveys in Sichuan. In 1950, he married Chen Zuning. He earned his doctorate in 1951. From 1952 to 1955, he served as a Chinese lecturer at the University of London. From 1956 to 1958, he worked as a cultural secretary at the Swedish Embassy in China. From 1959 to 1965, he was a professor of Chinese at the Australian National University. From 1965 to 1990, he was a professor of Chinese at Stockholm University. His main research interests include dialectology, Chinese phonology, ancient and modern Chinese grammar, and poetic prosody. He has translated over forty ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary Chinese literary works, including Water Margin and Journey to the West, and serves as a member of the Nobel Prize in Literature jury.
