In May 1929, FIFA officially decided to hold the first FIFA World Cup in 1930, to be held every four years thereafter. Six countries bid for the th World Cup. In the end, Uruguay, coincidentally celebrating its 100th anniversary of independence, was fortunate to win the hosting rights. The th World Cup trophy, the "Rembet" Cup, was named after Jules Rimet, the then FIFA president and a strong advocate of the World Cup, and was designed by French sculptor Abel. The statue was modeled after Nike, the Greek goddess of victory with wings, dressed in a belted gown, arms outstretched, holding a large cup. The statue was cast in pure gold, standing 40 cm tall and weighing 1,800 grams, with a marble base adding another 2,000 grams, totaling 4,000 grams. The th World Cup was held in Uruguay from July 13 to July 30, 1930. Due to the long distance from Europe to South America, some European football powers decided not to participate. The th World Cup had 13 participating countries in the end. Uruguay dominated the final, defeating Argentina 4:2 to win the championship of the first World Cup. The match was extremely intense and the atmosphere was fiery. After the game, Argentina expressed dissatisfaction, and the two national football associations had a dispute, leading to a break in diplomatic relations.
