Features: The concept of "Contemporary Chinese Literature" adopted in this book refers to Chinese literature from the 1st National Conference of Literature and Art Workers held in Beijing in July 1949 to the end of the 20th century. It is a part of 20th-century Chinese literature but also has relative independence. In the late 1940s, intense political/military actions divided China into two parts: the mainland and Taiwan. Due to different social and cultural environments, the literatures of the two regions evolved differently. This book provides a brief overview of their respective situations. Contemporary literature in mainland China can be roughly divided into two periods, with the turning point being the end of the "Cultural Revolution" in 1976. The overall trend of the first period was the establishment and continuous reinforcement of literary unification, while the overall trend of the second period was the gradual disintegration of literary unification and the initial formation of diversification.
