Features: This textbook is divided into two volumes, with the first volume intended for first-year university students and the second volume for second-year students. Each volume contains 25 units, with each unit consisting of two lessons. Each lesson follows the following sequence: Pre-reading, Text, New Words, Phrases and Expressions, Proper Names, Notes, and Exercises. At the end of each unit, two simple and easily understandable English proverbs are appended to allow students to appreciate the beauty of the language and enhance their interest in learning English.
Pre-reading: Before each text, we design some discussion and reflection questions centered around the theme of the text to give students a general understanding of the relevant issues before reading and to provide them with opportunities to practice English speaking through group discussions.
Text: Most of the texts are selected from newly published foreign newspapers, magazines, and books, some of which are famous works by renowned authors. The content is positive, the language is standard, the writing is rigorous, vivid, and novel, fully reflecting the characteristics of the times. Each volume contains over 50 texts, which is highly beneficial for expanding students' knowledge and broadening their horizons.
New Words: Based on the latest vocabulary list of the College English Teaching Syllabus (Revised Edition), new words appearing in each unit are reviewed and listed at the end of the text, including vocabulary beyond the syllabus. Each new word is accompanied by the international phonetic alphabet, part of speech, and Chinese translation, enabling students to grasp the meaning of the words in real-time while reading the text.
Phrases and Expressions: Chinese translations are provided for phrases and idiomatic expressions that appear in each text to facilitate students' learning and help them master authentic English expressions promptly.
Notes: Language points and knowledge points that appear in the text are listed as annotations at the end of the text to help students better understand the text and expand their knowledge.
Exercises: To help students deepen their understanding of the text, the design of the exercises fully considers the richness of content and the diversity of forms. While retaining a certain number of objective choice questions to assess students' comprehension of the text, the emphasis is placed on subjective exercises, such as fill-in-the-blanks, question-and-answer, and translation, to help students consolidate what they have learned and reflect on the text. Some questions are open-ended, which encourages students to consider issues from multiple perspectives, stimulates their thinking, and thus helps their English learning progress beyond the stage of receiving language knowledge to a more creative application of this knowledge, cultivating their comprehensive language proficiency.
