During the Cultural Revolution, Jiang Xiaomin, a scion of a military family and a martial arts master, falls in love. Under the secret machinations of his former classmate Zhao Yuanjia, a KGB agent, Jiang and his lover Yu Shuanghong are forced to cross the border and flee to a foreign country, seeking refuge with their former classmate and KGB officer Aleksey. Together, they become KGB agents. Jiang Xiaomin, with his exceptional martial arts skills and spy talents, successfully completes several special missions in places like the Soviet Union, Hong Kong, France, and Vietnam, earning the respect of the KGB leadership and being regarded as an "excellent agent." Meanwhile, Zhao Yuanjia, who has long harbored feelings for Jiang Xiaomin, constantly schemes to compete with Yu Shuanghong for his affection. Meanwhile, Zhao Yuanjia's lover, Aleksey, is utterly captivated by the beautiful and innocent Yu Shuanghong. The two, after plotting and planning together, scheme against Jiang Xiaomin and Yu Shuanghong, intending to win the love of both Jiang and Yu. Jiang Xiaomin and Yu Shuanghong defy the KGB's strict prohibitions on love and marriage, continue to love each other, and insist on leaving the KGB to marry and start a family. To achieve his goal of possessing Yu Shuanghong, Aleksey, through his father's high-ranking position in the KGB, assigns Jiang Xiaomin to New York to execute a dangerous mission: to assassinate Wu Chunhua, a KGB defector and senior female agent, with the intention of killing Jiang. In exchange, Jiang Xiaomin agrees with the KGB that after completing this mission, he and Yu Shuanghong can leave the KGB and marry. Jiang Xiaomin faces numerous hardships and risks, escaping from U.S. Central Intelligence after being arrested following a failed assassination attempt, and successfully assassinating Wu Chunhua again. However, when he completes the mission and returns to the Soviet Union with joy, planning to leave the KGB with Yu Shuanghong, he discovers that Yu Shuanghong has already committed suicide after being brutally assaulted by Aleksey! Jiang Xiaomin is filled with regret and hatred, determined to avenge Yu Shuanghong. Later, surrounded by heavily armed KGB personnel, Jiang Xiaomin, in front of his general father-in-law Aleksey, kills Aleksey at Yu Shuanghong's grave and then takes his own life with a gunshot.
