Features: This book is a specialized study on the structure, division of labor, and construction strategy of China's capital region. It focuses on the economic ties, industrial structure, spatial structure, and functional division within the region, presenting a comprehensive view of the capital region's reality and prospects from economic, social, ecological, and spatial perspectives, as well as how to advance its development. The book systematically organizes and explores the basic concepts and criteria for defining metropolitan areas, combining China's urbanization development stage, characteristics, and the uniqueness of the capital region to highlight the definitions and issues of China's metropolitan areas and capital regions. It describes the stages of metropolitan area formation and evolution and analyzes the driving mechanisms for advancing metropolitan area development. Based on a comprehensive introduction to general models of spatial connections and spatial structure changes in metropolitan areas abroad, it summarizes the commonalities and differences of these models. For the first time, this book divides the capital region into narrow, medium, and broad scales—narrow capital region, medium capital region, and broad capital region—and into functional connections—capital economic region, capital ecological region, and capital leisure tourism region. The book also analyzes and elaborates on the basic development trends of China's major metropolitan areas, the similarities and differences of China's three major metropolitan areas (capital region, Yangtze River Delta metropolitan area, and Pearl River Delta metropolitan area), their spatial structures, division of labor, and regional cooperation. Building on an analysis of the background and current status of the capital region's development, the book proposes an economic, social, ecological, and spatial development blueprint and construction strategy for the capital region. It proposes that the capital region should become an economic center with international and domestic competitiveness, driving the development of northern China, and should be a stage where natural ecology and the economy develop harmoniously, with sustainability, providing a safe, comfortable, and convenient production and living environment for 60 million residents.
