Since the mid-1990s, "focus" news columns, known for their distinctive feature of public opinion supervision, became popular across the country, becoming a unique media landscape in China's reform and opening-up and modernization process. This paper examines the basic characteristics of the "focus phenomenon" from the perspectives of sociology, political science, and communication studies. It investigates the political features, value systems, cultural environment, and social psychology of China during its social transformation, as well as the impact of communication policies on mass media. It also evaluates the role positioning of China's news media under the new economic operating environment.
