Kōji put on wooden clogs marked with the hotel's logo and walked up a gentle slope. Soon, a fork in the road appeared ahead. One of the steeper paths led to a slightly higher hill, said to be the site of an ancient castle. Kōji chose the steeper path.
Morning glories sprawled along the roadside, sometimes winding around tree trunks, sometimes entwining themselves around protruding rocks. Small lavender flowers dotted the green leaves. Larch trees stood tall on the sloping hillside, their entire bodies dyed crimson by the rising sun. The mist in the mountains dissipated piece by piece under the morning glow. The air in the morning was truly unimaginably fresh, and Kōji's alcohol-intoxicated mind seemed to clear up a bit.
I heard that doctors at the hospital often use oxygen to sober up after drinking. I wonder if it really works. The air here seems to have the same effect. To confirm that his head no longer hurt, Kōji shook it a few times.
Because of the long-awaited reunion with an old friend after many years, they naturally drank too much. Everyone stayed up late last night, so when Kōji left the hotel early this morning, the rooms were still filled with snoring.
One side of the road was a winding small river, narrow but surprisingly abundant in water. Not far ahead, where the river widened, a gnarled old tree bent into a "7" shape, its branches reaching toward the water. The leaves cast a considerable shadow on the water, providing a rare resting spot for the small fish, who were eagerly opening their mouths.
Kōji opened his eyes and suddenly noticed a white figure walking down the slope. Upon closer inspection, it was a woman in a natural wool-colored dress. When it comes to nearby hotels, there is only one—Green Water Hotel, where Kōji and his friends stayed. Therefore, Kōji immediately concluded that the woman in the white dress was one of his friends.
Just as Kōji hesitated, the woman approached, and he finally recognized her as Sōko Kojima. Kōji stopped walking. Sōko grew closer.
The gentle morning breeze carried back memories of the distant past, as if such a scene had appeared long ago. But back then, it was on the street, with the warm sunset shining on everyone. Both Kōji and Sōko were so young then, with endless time stretching into the future. Time was so pure.
