Features: Ji Xianlin (1911–) was a linguist and Indologist. Born in Qingping, Shandong (now Linqing), he graduated from Tsinghua University's Department of Western Literature in 1934. In 1941, he received a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of G?ttingen, Germany. Upon returning to China in 1946, he served as a professor, head of the Department of Oriental Languages and Literatures, vice president, committee member of the University Affairs, director of the South and Southeast Asia Research Institute, member of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, second-term member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Philosophy and Social Sciences Division, president of the Chinese Association of Foreign Language Teaching, president of the China South Asia Society, vice president of the Chinese Higher Education Society, president of the China Language Society (Second Term), vice president of the China Society of Foreign Literature (Second Term), and president of the China Dunhuang and Turpan Society (Second Term). A member of the Democratic League of China, he joined the Communist Party of China in 1956. He served as a standing committee member of the Sixth National People's Congress and a member of the National Committee of the National People's Congress from the second to fifth terms. He dedicated his career to the study of ancient Indian languages and literature, the history of Indian Buddhism, the history of Sino-Indian cultural relations, and Tocharian. His works include Collected Papers on Ancient Indian Languages, Papers on the History of Sino-Indian Cultural Relations, and others such as The Journey to the West in the Tang Dynasty. This book, written in a documentary style, details Ji Xianlin's winding academic journey, his scholarly research, and his life outside of academia, vividly portraying the image of a rigorous scholar with a rich and fulfilling life. The book is rich in content and highly readable, making it a worthwhile read.
