Features: "Film and Television Masterpieces" is a rather grand concept, encompassing too many branches to be exhausted in a single book. The author has chosen to discuss only three representative parts—movies, television documentaries (including television special programs), and television dramas—based on their own interests. The central thread running through them is "documentary and fiction." The structure of the book is as follows: Chapter "Explaining Film Masterpieces" and Chapter "Explaining Television Documentary Masterpieces" adopt a horizontal micro-reading approach, which is close reading; Chapter "Case Studies on the Art of Television Drama Directors" adopts a vertical macro-reading approach, which is extensive reading, and also includes a micro-reading of two short television drama masterpieces directed by Zhang Shaolin. Only by combining the macro and micro approaches can they complement each other. In 2001, a television documentary called "Ying and Bai" sparked fierce debate because it gradually blurred the line between "documentary and fiction" and challenged people's understanding of the ontological nature of television documentaries. Regardless, it at least provided us with another way of seeing the world, encouraging us to think about the deeper issues hidden behind the surface of things. This alone is enough to prove the value of this work.
