Features: Entering the new century, Chinese flower-and-bird painting faces a new situation requiring further improvement in creative level and innovative development. To advance and flourish the art of flower-and-bird painting, the Central Academy of Fine Arts held a high-level creative training class in flower-and-bird painting, with Professor Guo Yizhuo as the mentor. This was the first high-level creative training class in flower-and-bird painting ever held by the Central Academy of Fine Arts, as well as in the entire country, enrolling a total of twenty-five students. A group of promising middle-aged and young flower-and-bird painters, under the guidance of their mentor, followed the principle of synchronized progress in theory, life, and techniques, combining copying, sketching, and creation closely. They grasped the laws of transformation in flower-and-bird painting by analyzing its vertical historical evolution and horizontal comparative connections, drew inspiration from new life, updated artistic concepts, and explored the development direction of flower-and-bird painting in the new century, aiming to create new works with depth and a sense of the times. Sketching is a crucial part of the entire creative teaching process, serving as one of the foundational training methods, enhancing modeling skills, and being the primary way to create typical images and compositional artistic expressions from life. It is also one of the teaching characteristics long explored by Professor Guo over the years. After a year of practice, the mentor's leading role was fully leveraged, and the collective strength and individual advantages of the students were brought into play, achieving good teaching results. In modeling training, students showed significant improvement in their ability to discover, capture, and create from life, as well as in transforming life forms into artistic expressions. A relatively complete tutorial on flower-and-bird painting sketching was gradually summarized. This book compiles Professor Guo Yizhuo's teaching plans, articles, and sample paintings on sketching, as well as the classroom exercises, field sketching assignments, and learning reflections of the high-level training class students. Its publication will be beneficial to the research on Chinese painting teaching and the improvement of creative skills.
