This book primarily selects the most important narrative poems, prose poems, and lyrical poems from Tagore's works. Most of his narrative poems were written from the 1870s to the early 20th century, a period when Tagore was most active in his thoughts against colonialism, sympathetic to the working masses, and committed to just causes. Therefore, they mostly revolve around themes of praising national heroes, promoting patriotism, and calling for unity. With Tagore withdrawing from mass anti-British movements in the early 20th century, he turned to writing prose poems and lyrical poems, losing their political nature but gaining more ambiguity and mysticism. The poems from this period reflect the poet's disillusionment with reality, spiritual distress, and even attempts to seek solace in religion.
