Five Weeks in a Balloon is Verne's science fiction novel, telling the story of the mid-19th century, when many explorers, geographers, and travelers, despite their arduous and extraordinary expeditions to Africa and leaving behind many valuable records and maps, were unable to explore the African region between 14° and 33° East. At this time, the British traveler Samuel Ferguson decided to verify the achievements of previous explorers and conduct a survey of this region in Africa. Although he faced skepticism from others, he set off from Zanzibar in Africa with his friend Kennedy and his servant Joe, traveling north in a hot air balloon he designed himself, experiencing countless hardships and obstacles along the way, and finally reached the French territory along the Senegal River, thus completing the unfinished mission of his predecessors and breaking the doubts and speculations of others. The book vividly and delicately depicts the landscapes of the African continent, covering high mountains, vast seas, swamps, lowlands, deserts, rivers, and tropical geographical features such as volcanoes; tropical plants like baobabs, figs, acacias, and tamarind trees are truly bizarre; and tropical animals such as elephants, hippos, crocodiles, vultures, leopards, and hyenas are all present. There are also thrilling scenes where the protagonists outsmart wild men and monkeys, all of which inspire readers to imagine and even feel the urge to embark on an adventurous journey to Africa. The hot air balloon is their mode of transportation, and even for Chinese readers today, it remains a relatively unfamiliar concept. Yet the protagonist had already thought of using it as a tool for exploration in the mid-19th century. Even more interestingly, the author even introduces the complex structure of the balloon to the readers through the protagonist, revealing the author's extensive knowledge and highly imaginative mind. The novel combines the novelty of the hot air balloon with the beauty of the landscapes, adding to its appeal. The book also reflects the friendship and care between people: the three travelers once risked their lives to save a French missionary; when the balloon was about to fall into Lake Chad, Joe bravely jumped into the lake to save the lives of his two companions, allowing the balloon to rise again; and when Joe was fleeing from a savage tribe in the Sahara Desert, Kennedy's gunshot saved Joe from their clutches. This spirit of mutual love and assistance is something we should cherish and promote in today's self-centered era.
