Thyroglossal cystectomy or thyroglossal duct excision should be performed. If surgery is not performed properly, the recurrence rate can be as high as around 38%. The main reason for recurrence is the failure to remove the mid-part of the hyoid bone. For thyroglossal cyst or fistula excision, it is essential to remove one-third of the mid-part of the hyoid bone and the intramuscular fistula, along with a circumferential resection around the area.
