Publish Date: 2002-11-01
Features: Among the three ancient Greek romance novels introduced in this book, Callias and Calliroe by Callimachus is widely recognized as the earliest (around the early 2nd century AD). Unlike other romance novels that depict engaged couples enduring hardships to finally marry, this work begins with the happy marriage of a loving couple. However, the male protagonist Callias falls victim to the schemes of jealous rivals, who unjustly suspect his pregnant wife of infidelity. He kicks her unconscious, believing her dead, and buries her by the sea. A grave robber discovers she is still alive and sells her to a lord as a slave. To preserve Callias's lineage, she is forced to marry the lord and later imprisoned by the Persian Emperor. Callias learns of his wife's fate and, with the help of his friends, sails across the sea to find her. After enduring countless hardships, he eventually defeats the Persian Emperor with the help of the Egyptian army and reunites with her.
Daphnis and Chloe, completed around the late 2nd century AD, focuses on love with a very simple plot: the blossoming and development of love between a shepherd boy and a shepherd girl, which eventually ignites into an all-consuming fire. Among the surviving ancient Greek romance novels, Heliodorus's Aethiopica is the latest (around the 3rd century AD), the longest in length, features the most characters, has the most complex plot, and employs the most innovative style. This book includes three novels, primarily describing the love stories of young lovers who endure hardships and ultimately reunite.

Daphnis and Chloe tells the story of the male and female protagonists, who were abandoned by their parents in childhood and raised by two shepherds. As they grow up, they become shepherds together and fall in love. Under the protection of the gods, they endure various trials, eventually find their birth parents, and finally marry.
The main plot of Aethiopica is as follows: The Greek youth Theagen and the young woman Chariclea fall in love and escape Greece together, only to be captured by pirates. After a series of twists and turns, at the critical moment when they are about to be killed as sacrifices to the gods, the young woman is recognized by her own parents—the King and Queen of Ethiopia. This couple finally comes together in love.
