Features: This book is a new generation of British novels. The novel describes a female photographer who suddenly encounters a mysterious car accident and loses her memory temporarily; at the same time, a couple of dead bodies are found in the woods. One of the deceased is a good friend of her fiancé. All the evidence points to her being the main suspect.
At thirty-four, the stylish photographer Jean Constance is the only daughter of Adam Constance, the CEO of a large company. Her husband, Russell, was brutally killed by a hammer, and this unsolved case casts an indelible shadow over Jean's heart, deepening the rift between her and her father. Several years later, Jean suffers another devastating blow when she is involved in a mysterious car accident and temporarily loses her memory. All signs suggest she was attempting suicide. Meanwhile, in Adling Wood, Hampshire, the bodies of a young couple are discovered, clearly indicating murder. It is confirmed that the deceased are Jean's fiancé, Leo, and her best friend, Meg—before the incident, they were planning to run away together. Leo had revealed to Jean that the marriage would still take place, but the bride would be replaced by Meg. All the evidence points to Jean and Adam being the main suspects in both cases. At this point, the miraculously unharmed Jean, under the close watch of the police and a hospital physician, struggles to regain her memory. The closer she gets to the truth, the more she feels as if she is trapped in a dark room, where everything she experiences is unsafe and unstable. A nameless fear grips her, leaving her with no escape.
