Features: Plum, Orchid, Bamboo, and Chrysanthemum—the Four Gentlemen—have been revered in the hearts of the Chinese people since ancient times as symbols of purity. Through the ages, poetry and prose inspired by these four plants have flourished like clouds and mist, with countless masterpieces created by renowned poets, deeply cherished by enthusiasts of poetry. However, previously published collections of poetry either scattered verses about plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum among other works, making them difficult to locate, or, while offering categorized single volumes, included only a limited number of poems, failing to meet the needs of readers who are particularly fond of poetry on these themes. The publication of this series, Selected Poems of Plum, Orchid, Bamboo, and Chrysanthemum in China, perfectly addresses their long-standing desire. This book is divided into four volumes, with the following number of poems: Volume of Plum: 1,490 poems; Volume of Orchid: 428 poems; Volume of Bamboo: 650 poems; Volume of Chrysanthemum: 781 poems. The selection of poems emphasizes literary quality, artistic style, and profound meaning. The works included range from the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period to the Qing Dynasty. Therefore, this book can help a broad readership appreciate and study the essence of Chinese traditional culture embodied in poetry about plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum, enhance their artistic cultivation, refine their character, and enrich their lives.
